"Do the hard yards early, this will make your day a big success, and more fun. Get people to save the date. People plan garage sales a long while out so have them save up their goodies until the weekend. It was hard to estimate an exact number, but it seemed like the whole of Emerald was out and about shopping last year." MediaStart the conversation early with your local media contacts, and give them a steady stream of story ideas in the weeks leading up to the big day. Central Highlands Regional Council sent regular updates to their media distribution list and used statistics from the Garage Sale Trail Council Dashboard to keep the updates interesting and localised. They also used the registrations in the Council Dashboard to connect the local newspaper reporter with hosts of sales to arrange editorial stories to accompany a series of well-placed advertisement bookings. Printed Map
All council staff were also provided with a printed copy of the map and stacks of extra copies were available for collection at council service centres. Hayden also left copies of the map at the first garage sales he visited on the day. Social MediaCentral Highlands Regional Council had success in collaborating with the local Emerald Buy Swap and Sell group which has over 20,000 members representing half the population in their region. The key to running a successful campaign on social media was making posts that were fun and exciting, something that people wanted to organically share with their friends. 238 people RSVP’d as attending on the Facebook event set up by council, however staff estimate the number of shoppers was closer to 2,000 people – “It seemed like the whole of Emerald was out and about.” Tips for Sellers and ShoppersHelpful tips were also useful for media stories and social media content with tips for both sellers and shoppers provided through council social media channels and in media articles. Examples used in their campaign included ‘Background music at garage sales reduces awkward silences by 100%’ and ‘Bring small change.’ Central Highlands Regional Council Photos from the DayThis case study was kindly provided by Hayden Thompson, Corporate Communications Officer from Central Highlands Regional Council
